Son #1 and his wife replaced their washing machine with a larger model and asked if we wanted their smaller one....free! Of all the conveniences that we left behind, I missed my washer the most. We did not have to think long... Of course we would take it! Thanks Dan and Tinah!!
The machine is a front-loader, and uses very little water and little soap....perfect for our new digs and septic tank! DH has a new toy.
We turned down their offer of a dryer. It is an older model. and I suspect, an energy hog. We don't miss ours. We hang our wet clothes on a wooden rack in front of the pellet stove, and they dry in a very few hours.
Another convenience that I will not replace, is my dishwasher. I am quite happy to wash our dishes by hand...and if I leave them long enough, hubby usually gets tired of not being able to use the sink, and will wash them up.
We have made many changes in our energy consumption since moving here. I drive less. I shop less. We use fewer lights, and have replaced all with very low watt bulbs.
DH has sealed leaks around windows and has covered several with clear plastic. It is toasty warm in our little cabin.

We have made a conscious decision not to buy too many clothes..we give a piece away to Goodwill when we have to buy something new (except underwear, of course. ha) I take that back...I have donated some fancy bras that I bought and wore once or twice and because they were uncomfortable and still like new, I have donated them on. We are also doing a big "downsizing" this coming spring by planning a huge rummage sale...we don't need all that stuff that has been in boxes in storage over the last 6 years, for sure!
ReplyDeleteThat reminds me of all those jeans in my closet that haven't been worn in two years because I can't fit into them. They should be going to the Good Will but first I have to admit I'll never get into them again...
ReplyDeleteI've been buying second hand clothes for the last year or so. But now I'm a little worried about bringing bedbugs home. I'm going to have to do a little research to see how they handle the clothes when they come in the door.
ReplyDeleteThe mall in Ptbo was completely renovated and doubled in size a year ago. I'm proud to say I've only been in it twice, both times against my will. ;-) Nice to have lost any addiction to mall-walking.
