My transition from cluttered to simple living.

Simplicity

A wise person once told me that you don't have to be a Mennonite to live like a Mennonite. That same person told me that to avoid excess in our lives we should remember these words... "Moderation in all things."

It has taken me a lifetime to learn that a life lived simply and mindfully and moderately is what I desire most.

I am reminded of simple living when I pass the homes of the Mennonite in our area.

I am reminded of "Moderation" when I remember the pain of living with an alcoholic, or when I remember the things I thought I needed, only to see those desired items now stored in boxes in my garage.

I feel happiest when I do those things that remind me that I have a responsibility to do my part to care for this beautiful...beautiful...planet. Mindful living denotes operating with contemplation, conscience, ownership and recognition in all things that we do.

I cannot be a Mennonite. I am not certain that I would want to be...BUT...I will remember their example, and continually strive to journey towards that destination of simplicity...moderation...and mindful living.

  1. What a beautiful post, Wendy. I agree that it is the mindfulness of simplicity that is the most important part of simplicity. Two years ago when we moved from Colorado to Washington state, we left behind many of the things I thought I couldn't live without. They have not been replaced, and I am happier now without having so many "things" to worry about. Very nicely written, too. Thank you.

  2. I could not agree with you more Wendy. I still have a long way to go on the 'simplifying' of our home being complete but I have made great strides in that direction and am loving it.

  3. Hi Wendy
Thanks for your comment. We can't see the ash (yet) as it's above the clouds. It's just causing a lot of distruption to air travel.
I desire a simpler way of life too. When I go away I have everything in need in my suitcase and I think of everything at home and realise lots of it is not really needed. Once in a while I have some spare time to go through a box and try to clear stuff out.
    Loved your beautiful post today.
